What is acupuncture?
A non-invasive, virtually side-effect free treatment form for pain management and healing. Acupuncture is a holistic method of treatment that has been in use for 4000 years in traditional Chinese medicine. This wealth of experience of Chinese physicians was first documented some 2200 years ago in the famous Werly Huang Di Nei Jing.
Today acupuncture is recognised internationally as pain therapy and for the treatment of many diseases and has been integrated into Western medicine. The WHO (World Health Organisation) also recommends acupuncture for the treatment of over 40 diseases. The effectiveness of acupuncture is confirmed by the very latest research results on pain therapy and curative treatment.
It involves a virtually side-effect free method that, using specially ground single-use acupuncture needles is pain free and particularly non-invasive. The inhibition of pain transmission is effected through the sensory stimulation of acupuncture even at the spinal cord level. In addition, analgesic and anti-inflammatory hormones, for example endorphins, are produced. Acupuncture sets immunologically acting mechanisms in action, thus furthering the regeneration of damaged tissue.
The treatment duration of a session is generally some 20 to 30 minutes. Depending upon the disease, a treatment series usually requires 40 to 20 sessions. Special forms of acupuncture are ear, cranial and hand acupuncture.
Acupuncture is an individual health service not paid for by statutory health insurers. Private health insurers usually reimburse the treatment.
